Gas station BBQ on the way to Cape May. The restaurant isn't anything special and is located on the side of a Shell gas station. We stopped on and got the NC pulled pork sandwiches. They had light smoke a a little heat. You get to choose between a 4oz or 6 oz sandwich on a really good roll. Service was quick and friendly. I'd definitely stop here again.

On the way back home from Lewes Delaware, and stopped in at Hot Off The Coals BBQ (which is attached to a Shell gas station @ Starr Rd and Rt. 404) for some bbq. I ordered the large sliced beef brisket sandwich and my wife, the pulled bbq chicken sandwich. Both were good but not great. The beef brisket was flavorful with a authentic smokey taste and was piled with tender thickly sliced beef brisket, served on potato bread. The chicken sandwich was not as good as the beef (I prefer beef to chicken always!), but my wife said it was good. Not the best bbq by any means; however, it's certainly worthy of the stop to eat authentic bbq while traveling to and from the beach. Rich, the owner, is a really nice fellow and serves up some decent bbq if you've got the craving for 'que and in the beach mood!

This was our second visit to this restaurant. It's a bit of an "adventure". It shares a building with a tiny Shell gas station. The restaurant only has about 10 tables inside. There are a few picnic tables outside. My son had the ham. I had the turkey. My husband had the beef. The meat was all thinly shaved which I have never seen at BBQ places before. I had the potato salad as a side and it was really good. My husband had the baked beans which had some heat to them. My son had fries which were hand cut and delicious. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I had to wipe down our table and the bathrooms aren't that clean. Plus we ordered platters and we all got sandwiches. Also the sides are very pricey for the amount you get. BUT their BBQ is excellent.

For gas station BBQ this place is pretty good. I was starving on my recent trip to Ocean City, MD and my only stipulation was "No Subway." So when I saw BBQ (with a real smoker outside) I decided to go for it. I had the NC style BBQ sandwich. It was surprisingly good. It was a little dry but the meat was really tender. I got the baked beans on the side - I think they make these homemade! I was impressed. Overall, I would stop here again.

This little spot was super conveniently placed on my drive to Ocean City, literally right on the highway. So I stopped in and ordered a pulled pork sandwich. It came out quickly but didn't have much flavor. It was a sweet bbq pulled pork which I normally prefer but there was just nothing else to it. And it was 8 or 9 dollars for a relatively small sandwich. Combine that with the fact that the bathrooms were gross, gross enough that I almost didn't want to use them even though I needed to. It probably beats McDonalds food, maybe I just didn't get one of the better options...

As you travel along RT 404 you start to see signs like those from Burma Shave urging you to try the Pitt beef and pulled pork. Those were calling me and we stopped to eat at yet another gas station, this time a Shell. It was well worth the time because the beef was good, and brisket excellent. The buns, usually a weak point, were darn near perfect. Good, hard and perfect for holding the meat and sauce. Very much a Weck-like roll. They have NC vinager sauce for their pork and standard stuff for the other offerings. The fries were OK--nothing special. But those sandwiches... I'm stopping on the way home.

Feasting on BBQ in the middle of no-where is an affinity that I cannot break away from! Whether you call it an addiction or craving, I'm an easy seller to trying out BBQ joints. This past Summer (2013), my gal and I made a pit stop here on the way to the beach. We ordered the 3 meat combo of Turkey, Pit Beef, and Pit Pork. The meats were well seasoned and tasty. The BBQ was indeed tasty and delicious! For our sides we choose BBQ baked beans and sweet potato chips. The beans were fine but the sweet potato chips had too much cinnamon. Despite ordering a 3 meat combo with 2 sides, we were still hungry! Suffice to say, the servings were small compared to what I'm used to feasting on. I was delighted to try Hot off the Coals; however, I would probably not stop by there again given the small servings associated to their price point.

Three stars for average, just average. Not much smoke in the meat. (I had the two meat combo so tried brisket and pulled pork) Counter staff were lazy teenagers that didn't seem to care about anything. Fixing bar was a filthy mess, hadn't been attended to in some time so I took a pass on the onions and horseradish. Baked beans seemed from a can not all that good. No cornbread on the menu. All in all better than a burger chain menu if you happen to be driving by but not worth a special trip.

Stopped here after visiting Adkins Arboretum. Only place around. The good: vinegar barbecue pork and baked beans. The ok: sliced turkey. The not ok: fatty brisket (not trimmed right) and flies- yuk. The good news is you can buy gas there too.

I've been here twice (June 2013) and today, and was pretty impressed both times. Prices are a bit high for the area (and for BBQ), but the Carolina-style pulled pork is the best I've had outside of NC itself. The sides are pretty good (so/so Mac-n-Cheese, great coleslaw), but that's alright with me - I'm there for the pork! For a gas station BBQ joint, I'm not sure it gets much better. The giant smoking steer iron sculpture/statue is awesome as well.

Just stopped in for a quick bite on the way to the beach. First time here. Ordering was easy, they made a few adjustments and when I apologized the cook said, "it's your food". I thought that was nice! Food was ready very quickly. Everything we had was very good.

So over priced. My boyfriend enjoys this place but for me and him to go there just to get a sandwich and soda, we end up having to pay $30! The sodas are so packed with ice that you literally get two sips from your $4 soda. The fries are the only good thing about this place. If you order a side (potato salad, beans) be prepared to be dissapointed because it only comes in a shot glass sized cup.

We stopped here for lunch on the way to the beach and really enjoyed the ribs and the turkey BBQ. The coleslaw was also good. Pretty standard fare but the taste was well above average compared to similar places we've tried.

Meh..We wanted an alternative to the fast food places nearby. I've had good brisket before and their slaughterhouse brisket is one of their top sellers. So me and the hub went for the sandwich with a side. The good... It was tender and well cooked. Service was fast and friendly. The bad...It was served at room temp! Not much flavor to the beef as well as the.potato salad, overall pretty skimpy for $8.50..Sides are tiny to say the least. Oh well, I gave it a try.

Being one of the more interesting car trip companions there alive, I dutifully passed out in the passenger seat after the excitement of driving over the scenic Bay Bridge on the way to Ocean City. My amazing conversational skills must have been sorely missed, because not long after, we made a stop at Hot Off the Coals for some stomach fuel. There's a massive wood-burning barbecue sitting outside, right next to a number of fuel pumps. +1 for portraying the feeling that an amazing gem was about to be discovered and that I could be the next Anthony Bourdain, showing off my uncanny ability to sniff out amazing food at the most unexpected places. Entering the joint, we were welcomed by a cluster of 8-10 booths and a counter at which to place our order. We weren't terribly hungry, so we got a half rack of ribs and a brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad (not hungry, eh?). The brisket was moist due to the high fat content, but it lacked the intense smokiness that one typically looks forward to when enjoying brisket. The bread for the sandwich was an uninspired roll - soft, but nothing special. Thankfully, there's a condiment bar with sweet and spicy BBQ sauce dispensers and thinly sliced onions to amp up the flavor. The ribs were tasty and nicely cooked, no complaints there! The line for the restroom did get horrendously long during our eating session there. I would say that there was no less than 10 people waiting in line at any given time, often more. Nature didn't call, so I wasn't able to use their facilities, but really, what awesomeness can be expected from a gas station restroom? All in all, this pit stop offered good change up of car trip food as compared to the typical McDonald's!

I saw signage for PIT BEEF so I had to stop by and try it. It is a little more pricey than pit beef establishments in the Baltimore area, and the meat was super dry. I think Pioneer Pit Beef in Catonsville, MD is still the #1 spot.

Dosen't deserve a second chance! Blaring country music greeted us as in the parking lot as we stepped out of the car, that may have been a sign... we ordered the rib and chicken combo with two sides- 22 dollars and they gigged us for another 50 cents for a cup of ice water. Really? So we picked a spot out front and when we put up the umbrella it was broken, ribs good, half chicken -the leg was a dried out knob- inedible, the flavorless slaw contained cabbage chunks the size of half dollars and the beans......well momma knocked over the sugar bowl in the pot. Oh yeah, use the bathroom before you leave home, you sure don't want to use theirs.

Not bad for a place next to the Shell gas station. I had the NC style pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato chips. Hubby had the beef with regular fries. The meat was good and buns fresh. I missed not having a mustard vinegar sauce. The sweet potato chips were sweet potato strips cut lengthwise, fries and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar- nice. Note: the "platters" are also sandwiches rather than just meat.

  • Alex O.

The good: They have terrific pit beef and excellent sweet tea. The bad: The pulled pork sucks, the brisket is dry and flavorless, as others have mentioned, the serving size for many of the sides is akin to a shot glass, and the place is definitely over-priced.

  • Anna S.

The good: -melt-in-your-mouth delicious barbecue, smoked as you watch in a totally righteous giant metal bull. -choice between thick, sweet Tennessee sauce or tangy North Carolina. The bad: -Portion sizes are measly considering the prices. I paid in the realm of $8 for a racquetball-sized scoop of pulled pork and a Dixie cup of baked beans. Weight Watchers would approve; my fat fat soul does not. -Service is slow and somewhat inattentive. I ordered a platter and got a sandwich, but I rolled with it. The ugly: -Oh Lord, the bathroom. This place--attached to a gas station--is the only food and bathroom stop for miles on the trip to Bethany/Rehoboth/Ocean City, but it's equipped with just two unisex onesies. Stopping here for lunch on a summer Saturday, I spent 15 minutes ordering and eating my food and about twice that waiting to pee. -As previous reviewers have noted, the owners appear to be pretty lax about hygiene. In sum: -The quality of the barbecue makes this place worth a visit despite its many flaws, but if you're thinking about using the bathroom, try your best to hold it till Delaware.

Visited Hot Off the Coals for lunch today. I had a 2 meat combo with brisket and sweet pulled pork. The brisket wasn't bad, and had a nice smoke flavor. The sweet pulled pork was nothing noteworthy. My sides were the potato salad, which lacked definite flavor, and baked beans which weren't too bad. My buddy had the ham, turkey and pit beef. I'd give his a 4 out of 10. I can see this place being good for some of their bbq sandwiches, but maybe steer clear of the bbq plates. Despite the mediocre lunch, the counter staff were some of the nicest girls around.

Food was superb. The bathroom on the other hand was disgusting. Dead flies on the ground, urine covered floors, and simply a homeless person would turn down this option. My sister in law dry heaved and needed to be resuscitated. We all wore poise pads for the remainder ride back to DC. Get it together!!!

Was looking forward to trying this place based on recommendations but the service was terrible and we never got our food. After 20 minutes, I asked if they had called our number and I missed it. The response was that it wasn't ready yet. Waited another 10-15 minutes and when my husband asked again, they said they lost the order. We were sitting right in front of the counter and at one point were the only ones in there! Terrible! They refunded our money and we left since we weren't going to wait another 20 minutes!

WHAT A RIP OFF. The pulled pork was tasty, however the brisket was "meh" at best. The biggest disappointment, however, were the portions. I couldn't believe how little food they gave us. All of the side dishes were served in tiny styrofoam cups, which probably hold no more than a few tablespoons. When I saw the tray of food I thought, "there's no way that's ours. Where's the rest of the food?". Just like another reviewer wrote, this is definitely a tourist trap. I mean, for $32 we shouldn't have left there hungry.

i'm new to the concept of a restaurant connected to a gas station, much less the idea that the restaurant might be kind of amazing. if this place is what all gas station-restaurant combos are like, then i'll be on the lookout for more next road trip! this place is really quite understated, but when you see the clues, you know there is good bbq and pit beef inside. leading up to the restaurant, they have signs along the road advertising their meaty meals. it is hard not to pull in. outside you see at least two giant grills that use real wood to heat up the 'cue. i got the 2-meat sampler and got brisket and pit beef. my favorite was definitely the brisket, but the pit beef is good for those who are averse to seeing the fat bits in the meat. great stuff! next time i'm heading out to ocean city or assateague, i'm stopping here!

get the stacked pit beef (get a large) tender and smokey, great bun. Fast service but a humorously long bathroom line. Uses peanut oil on fries, so that was a "no" for me, but they looked good. Nice staff.

Charlie and I accidentally stumbled upon this place on the way to the beach last year. Now it is a ritual. Honestly, some of the best pit beef and pit turkey. The fries rival any served on the boardwalk. And who would have thunk. Attached to a gas station in Queen Anne!

Driven by this place several times but always closed, finally caught a break this time! Just in time too because they were about to close but managed a brisket sandwich with fries and coleslaw. Coleslaw was shredded and sweet, liked it, fries good too. Brisket was wonderfully smoked and moist, though I would have preferred a bit of the fat back trimmed, but alas, that's moist. Kaiser roll a bit much but I was there for the meat and the meat satisfied. I look forward to trying other offerings. Nice condiment bar with sauces, kraut, onions, pickles, etc. They seem accommodating and perhaps a work in progress so if you don't see what you want, ask. Another reason to go to Rehoboth as often as possible!

We crossed the Bay Bridge on Friday evening, looking for a good place for dinner. Traffic pushing us on, kids screaming in the back seat, teenagers whining ... when the roadside burma-shave style signs appeared. "Pulled Pork". "Hot Pit Beef." (we're starting to pay attention now ....) "Eastern Shore Roadside BBQ Chicken." "Where's the BBQ??" By the time we got to the "Straight Ahead on Right!!" sign we were sold. When we saw this place was actually the side building of this dilapidated Shell station rather than a free standing pit ... wifey hesitated, and almost kept driving, but turned in at the last moment. In retrospect ... we're all wishing she'd have trusted her intuition. The teens actually liked their chicken cheese steak subs. That's why I'm allowing 2 stars rather than 1. Our pit beef was really nasty - like 0 stars. First issue: wifey ordered the regular, and I ordered the large ... and we couldn't figure out which was which. And it went downhill from there. We weren't sure the beef actually made it near a fire or a smoker: not rare, but disgusting rare; had no "smoke crust" around the edges; and was loaded with fat/gristle. The sauce (on the side) was probably some Open Pit from the grocery store. And the sides (cole slaw, baked beans) were about the same. Add to that the truck-stop nasty restrooms and the whole dive gas-station vibe ... and you'd be wise to ignore the signs, and press on.

Fast service. No Frills. Stick to the bar-b-que. Brisket was tender and generous...bread was fair and sauce too sweet. Best Bet: sweet potato chips. Beware of the ridiculous long line for the bathroom.

Finally, a fast, cheap tasty place to grab a meal if you are on the way to Bethany / Rehobeth / Dewey Beach from DC an have already passed the Kent Island bridge. You can see and smell the BBQ pit from Route 404 as you sidle up to the stop light...good sides, slow smoked meats, and ice cream cones....just what a beach bound gent needs.

These girls don't know what dry rub is. I asked before ordering if they could do the ribs in a dry rub. "Yes". Got bbq sause. Asked for dry rub again. They rubbed off the sauce and gave it back. Asked if they could put the dry rub seasoning on. They said it was on there. Bottom line, they just didn't care at that point. I'm very turned off to this place.

I was attracted to the smoke, often a good omen. Sadly, the pulled pork was mediocre, dry, shredded and stirred in BBQ sauce. Owner/chef needs a lesson in preparing pulled pork. Beans were only OK, and this is the easy side dish in a BBQ restaurant. Portions are surprisingly small for the price. Service is quick and friendly. Beats fast food if you are hungry and in a hurry, not many choices in this part of Maryland. Overall, disappointed. Will not return.

I agree with another review, having worked at a BBQ joint for a decade, Hot Off the Coals' portions are WAY too small for their prices. They either need to give you more food or back off on the price. I was raving about having a good BBQ joint near us since there's not much to choose from in this neighborhood for a meal out, but we went to eat dinner there on Sunday night and they were already closed at 7:25 pm. According to Google, they were supposed to be open until 8. There's nothing worse than having your dad in town from Massachusetts and calling him to tell him dinner will be an hour later than imagined because we have to a) find another option, b) order it and c) wait for it to be made and then drive home. I was NOT happy and we'll never go back. There's nothing I can't stand more than a place of service closing early. It's a shame because I think the food is great. The young servers that work there are slightly annoying to deal with as well; unsure of the menu, fooling around with each other and then screaming my name out from 6' away when our order was ready even though we were the only two people in the very small dining area. They're moving to 50 in Easton. Hopefully they can pull it together a little.

We were lured in by the smoker. Had a smoked turkey pit platter which was a sandwich. It came out lukewarm, looked and tasted like thinly sliced smoked turkey breast that you buy at a deli. I felt deceived because I thought I was getting smoked turkey from a whole actual turkey, along with the diversity of meat textures and not thin deli slices. It didn't even taste like turkey. Ugh. Indifferent service but good boardwalk fries.

Excellent pit beef sandwich! Not overly impressed by the BBQ sauce offered, but the oh so tender meat compensated. I'll admit to being slightly turned off by the location and judging the place as just a restaurant in a gas station - but this place is different. Great BBQ beans and boardwalk fries as well. Nice solid stop on the way to the beach- Enjoy! We sure did.

This is a great stop on your way to Rehoboth Beach, DE form the DC/Annapolis area. Everything is pit roasted right on the site and they do have a vegetarian option (a form of grilled cheese). The sweet potato fries are passable but greasy and the atmosphere is that of eating in a Greyhound bus station. My favorite dining companion and his friends seemed to enjoy the pit roasted fare very much. A must stop to mark your halfway point on your journey to the beaches.

  • Lorena B.

The Pit Beef sandwich is tasty and I like to add spicy BBQ sauce to it. It's fast and cheap and a good alternative to fast food when you're on the way to the shore. It's also adjacent to a gas station (Shell, I think). I haven't tried anything else but the menu also has brisket, turkey, pork, and burgers. Brownie points cause they keep a basket of free bones on the counter for the doggies :)

Can I give them 10 stars. This SO belongs on DDD with Guy Fieri. Drove past on our way back to Brooklyn. Got 1 with the hubs and shared it to try it out and went right back in and got 6 more sandwhiches. INSANELYYYYY good!!!

This place would have been super delish if the food was hot..but the smoke coming out of the smoker out front was a trick and our food was room temp/slightly cold, which totally cost them 1+ stars. Their bbq sauce is pretty legit and the meat is good quality and nicely cut..really it was just the temperature that dampened the experience...well that and the fact that their restroom smells like 50 hobos urinated all over the walls and they let it marinate the bathroom for a week on the hottest week of the year.

This is far and away the best bbq I have ever had. It is an absolute necessity to stop here when ever we are going to or from the beach!

    (5)
  • Elizabeth K.

wasn't bad, but wasn't the most delicious we have had. It was a little deceiving because there was a smoker outside, and we had though our food would come directly off the smoker, but it didn't. Food was a little colder than we would have liked.

What a surprise to find this unassuming jewel on the side of the road attached to a Shell gas station. Without a doubt, some of the best BBQ I have ever enjoyed. We sampled the North Carolina pulled pork sandwiches with cole slaw. The pork was well smoked, succulent and tender. The vinegar based sauce was tangy, magnifying and accentuating the flavors of the meat. My wife pronounced after finishing her sandwich that it was the best BBQ she had ever tasted. I'm not sure that I would agree with that accolade, but it damn sure is one heck of a tasty treat. Be forewarned that this BBQ carries a hefty tab, but it is worth it.

2.5 stars. I wanted to like this place but quickly realized it was a tourist trap. We ordered the pit beef combo with 1 side. I got the potato salad and the wife got the fries. The pit beef was great and the highlite. The potato salad side was VERY small. We are talking about 2 tbsp. of potato salad. Fries were good. Don't be thirsty! They are charging 50 cents for refills in soda. Also had to go back twice for Mayo packets; only get 2 at a time. If you just get the sandwich your fine, they nickel and dime you for everything else.

I get very excited about little pit beef places, but it's hard to top the Maryland legend of Chaps Pit Beef in Baltimore. This place does not hold a candle to Chaps, but most don't. It's just nice to see a place like this in such a location. However, the pit beef was very flavorful and had a very pronounced smoke ring. Nice thin sliced onions available at the condiments area. I also tasted the N.C. style pulled pork, and that was mouth watering, well-balanced, succulent and tender. The baked beans were surprisingly delicious and had a wonderful smokey flavor that I was not expecting. These might have been the hero of the meal. You eat one pit beef sandwich and before you're done you want another, which is a good sign, but they are pretty filling. I craved more but was full... for a while. Much later, that night I wanted more roast beef so bad that I pulled out my store-bought, packaged roast beef and was just dipping slices in horseradish sauce in hopes of feeding my beef craving, but it was just was not nearly the same. The beach-style french fries also were surprisingly good. They were near perfect! Fantastic fries. Don't miss them. I'm interested to go back some day and try the ribs and brisket, so yes I will return! Cons: 50-cent soda refills in styrofoam cups after being charged $1.89 for a medium that was packed full of ice. No sauce cups out at the condiments area, but the chimichurri type "relish" was a nice surprise and change-up. Needs better tiger sauce, though I appreciate the horseradish sitting out. The price seemed a bit towards the higher side the portion size. The cashier / order-taker lady, while not rude or attitudey, was just not very welcoming or pleasant at all, especially when I asked about free refills and interrupted her change counting which just seemed so much more important. ************ Bottom line: A super convenient and tasty quick stop for real food.

On a recent trip to Delaware, I stopped in here curious by the Yelp reviews even though few. It's about what you might expect on the inside, as it shares quarters with the gas station--convience store. They seem to offer all sorts of BBQ options from ribs to North Carolina style pulled pork. I got the brisket, curious as it is seldom seen this far east. I also got the North Carolina pulled pork sandwich. For some sides I got the Beans(large) and the Mac and Cheese (small). The good news is that the pulled pork, beans and mac and cheese were all awesome. The brisket was fair, but I have a house next to the best brisket sandwich that can be found. See Smoque BBQ Chicago, IL. While the brisket was a miss so were the prices. The Mac and Cheese (small) at $2.50 and was 3 bites at best, served in the foam cup, dixie cup size. I could have counted the individual noodles. But they were some some awesome noodles.

Stopped by and tried the 3-meat combo platter with baked beans. The brisket was chopped--not sliced--and was VERY dry, the pit beef was meh, the sweet pulled pork was ok, and the beans were fine. It was pretty pricey for what you get; I don't see a reason to ever eat here. Also, the bathrooms were gross and out of soap. I sure hope the employees were washing their hands!
